Hugh Kaznowski 287b81989c Merge ticket 046: chart legend squashing 2026-09-06 01:44:18 +01:00
Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 8a8e3f60ec Squash chart bars/legend into top-N + Other for many-series panels
PanelChart's BarChart and PieChart rendered one bar/slice and legend
row per PromqlSeries with no bound, so panels with many series wrapped
the 8-color palette (repeating colors) and produced unreadable,
unbounded legends. Add squashRows(), which sorts by value descending
and collapses series beyond COLORS.length - 1 into a single "Other"
bucket (sum of the rest), applied to both bar and pie chart data before
render. Panels at or below the threshold are unaffected.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 ed9aa8eb45 Allow clicking a declared param to load it into the form for editing
Mirrors Metrics.tsx's click-to-edit pattern: clicking a param chip
populates the declaration form, shows an "Editing" indicator, and swaps
the submit button for Save changes / Cancel. The name field is locked
while editing since declare_param overwrites in place by name — renaming
would silently orphan the original and anything referencing it.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 5e30e02a78 Make elapsed-since-last an explicit param extractor, not a Duration-kind special case (ticket 038)
Previously a Value-role param with kind: Duration silently meant "elapsed
time since the previous same-labeled event" instead of parsed text — the
same MetricPrimitiveKind::Duration variant meant two unrelated things
depending on which list (label_params vs value_param) referenced it.

Add ParamDeclaration::elapsed_since_last, a third extraction source
alongside capture_group/json_field_path: when set, the param is computed
(via a new resolve_param_value, used uniformly for label_params and
value_param) rather than text-extracted, and declare_param validates it's
paired with kind: Duration. apply_metric_to_log no longer branches on
(role, kind) — it dispatches purely on what each resolved param declares.

Migrate existing profiles: migrate_duration_value_params converts any
Duration-kind param referenced as a metric's value_param into the new
extractor, and resolve_or_create_legacy_param (ticket 037's pre-existing
migration) now carries the same meaning forward for pre-037 inline
Value-role Duration matchers.

Params.tsx offers "Elapsed since previous event" as its own Extraction
option (hides the now-irrelevant message-match-regex/capture-group
fields and forces kind to duration); Metrics.tsx labels such params
accordingly wherever they're listed as label/value param choices.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 e397f9fbdb Unify param declarations: metrics reference params by name (ticket 037)
Collapse the Params-panel ParamDeclaration and the metric-embedded
RegexToMetricPrimitiveMatcher into a single ParamDeclaration type
(name, regex/capture-group-or-json-field-path, kind). MetricDeclaration
now references params by name via label_params: Vec<String> and
value_param: Option<String> instead of embedding its own extractor per
param, so a param declared once in the Params panel can be reused as a
label or value by any number of metrics. Declaring a metric that
references an undeclared param name is now rejected at declare-time.

Backend:
- src/data_value.rs: unified ParamDeclaration struct; MetricDeclaration
data value now carries label_params/value_param instead of a Vec of
  inline matchers.
- src/engine.rs: DeclareParamRequest is now an alias for
  ParamDeclaration; DeclareMetricRequest carries label_params/
value_param; validate_metric_request checks referenced param names
against the declared-param store; apply_metric_to_log resolves
  label_params/value_param against a per-ingest resolved-param map
instead of reading an inline matcher list.
- src/profile.rs: MetricDeclarationRecord carries label_params/
  value_param plus a private, serialize-skipped legacy_params field
that only ever gets populated by deserializing a pre-037 profile
file's old "params" key. ProfileStore::load migrates any such legacy
metric into the unified shape (reusing an existing same-shaped bare
param by name, or creating one implicitly named
"<metric_name>.<param_name>"), then persists the migrated store so
the on-disk file only carries the legacy shape once. Migration is
idempotent (deterministic naming) and covered by dedicated tests.
- src/api.rs / src/dto.rs: MetricDeclarationDto and the declare/update
metric response bodies updated to the new shape.

Frontend:
- webapp/src/lib/api.ts: MetricDeclaration type now has label_params/
  value_param; MetricParamMatcher/ParamRole types removed.
- webapp/src/components/Metrics.tsx: the declaration form now fetches
declared params and lets you check off label params / pick a value
param from that list, instead of re-entering a regex/capture-group/
  kind per metric param.

Leaves ticket 038 (duration as a derived param kind) and 039 (param
query resolving declared params) untouched, as scoped.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 5aa7c1bae9 Fix regex help icon click-toggle and add PromQL by()/sum(rate()) grouping
RegexHelpIcon previously used a single `open` boolean driven by both hover
and click, so clicking to pin the popover open was undone by the next
mouseleave. Split into separate `pinned` (click) and `hovering` (mouse-over)
states so a click-toggle actually persists until clicked again.

The seeded `log_category` dashboard's line panel plotted the bare metric
name, since `sum()`/`rate()` always collapsed all label combinations into
one series and PromQL syntax had no way to preserve a label dimension
through an aggregation. Added `by (label, ...)` grouping and nested
`sum(rate(metric[range]))`/`avg(rate(...))` parsing, and made `rate()`
compute a real windowed time series instead of a single trailing point, so
a query like `sum(rate(log_category[1m])) by (category)` now renders one
line per category.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 d6b7f7dfb6 Make imported/linked CSS always a full theme replacement (ticket 020)
Removes the "Use as theme" checkbox/is_theme distinction from
NavMenu.tsx's CSS import and link forms — every imported/linked
stylesheet is now always validated against the canonical --c-*
variable set and becomes a selectable theme, same as today's
is_theme:true path. Drops is_theme entirely from the backend
(CssEntry, ImportCssRequest, LinkCssRequest, CssEntryDto) and from
the frontend CssEntry type; an existing settings.json with a stored
is_theme:false entry still deserializes fine (the field is simply
unknown/ignored) and that entry becomes selectable like any other,
so no migration step is needed. Also drops the now-dead
always-on-overlay CSS injection path from useSettingsPanel.ts, and
changes the CSS filename placeholder from "name.css" to "enter name".

Implemented directly against main rather than merging the dispatched
worktree branch for this ticket, since that branch's base predated
ticket 012 (the custom-themes/imported-CSS consolidation) and its
NavMenu structure no longer matched current main.

Resolves conflicts with tickets 006 (header-click collapse) and 009
(all-dashboards print view) in CollapsibleSection.tsx, Dashboards.tsx,
and Metrics.tsx: dropped a spurious onToggle addition from the
worktree's stale base that duplicated already-merged header-collapse
behavior, keeping only the activePreset plumbing; wired activePreset
through Dashboards' non-empty-state header too, which the source
branch (based on a pre-print-view commit) never had to touch.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 b3e0272544 Add JSON field path extraction for params/metrics (ticket 015)
RegexToMetricPrimitiveMatcher and the standalone param declaration
(DeclareParamRequest/DataValue::ParamDeclaration) gain an optional
json_field_path, an alternative to capture_group that reads a
dot-separated field path (e.g. "foo.bar") out of lines that parse as
JSON objects. It's additive and serde-defaulted, so existing
regex-based params/metrics are unaffected. Params.tsx now offers a
"JSON field" extraction option when the message match regex looks
like a JSON object.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 56da086c7a Allow editing an existing metric declaration in place (ticket 022)
Clicking a declared metric badge in Metrics.tsx now loads its regex/params
into the declaration form for editing (in addition to selecting it for the
bucket-values view), and shows those properties inline once selected rather
than only on hover. The backend gains PUT /api/metrics/{name}, backed by a
new engine::update_metric that reuses declare_metric's validation, requires
the metric to already exist, supports renaming, and re-backfills bucket data
from the new regex/params instead of leaving stale buckets from the old one.
Submitting the form while editing calls the update endpoint in place rather
than creating a second declaration; declaring a brand-new metric is unchanged.

Note: tickets/022-edit-existing-metric-declarations.md does not exist on this
worktree's branch (it was added to tickets/ on main after this branch was
created), so there is nothing to delete here.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 a9855de3ad Add Boolean param kind that is always present true/false (ticket 018)
MetricPrimitiveKind gains Boolean, serialized as "boolean". A param
declared with kind Boolean skips capture-group validation and, instead
of being omitted when message_match_regex doesn't match, is present on
every log line as true/false based purely on whether the regex matches
(case-insensitively or per the regex's own flags). Params.tsx lets you
pick boolean as a kind and disables the now-unused capture group input.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 7463050357 Carry over rolling preset id to popout tabs and add range controls to standalone Metrics/Dashboards
Popped-out tabs now carry the active TimeRangePresetId (e.g. "5m") via a
`preset` query param instead of only resolved absolute startMs/endMs, so a
rolling preset keeps independently sliding in the new tab on its own polling
cadence rather than freezing to the source tab's window at open time. A
fixed/dragged range is still carried over as absolute bounds. StandaloneRanged
(metrics/dashboards standalone pages) now owns its own preset/range state and
renders LogTimeline for its own preset buttons and drag-to-select UI, instead
of only ever showing a frozen, uncontrollable range. log and params standalone
pages are unchanged.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 68a18a286f Refetch dashboard panels on the shared polling cadence
PanelPreview only refetched its PromQL series when panel.promql,
chart_type, or range bounds changed, so panels went stale under a
fixed range or between rolling-preset ticks that didn't move the
window. Add a POLL_MS-driven tick folded into the same fetch effect
(alongside the existing deps) so it refreshes on the same cadence as
App.tsx's log/timeline polling without double-fetching when a range
change and a tick coincide. POLL_MS is now shared via
webapp/src/lib/polling.ts instead of living only in App.tsx.

Adds an "All dashboards" selector alongside the existing click-to-select

Verified in-browser: single-dashboard editing still works unchanged, and
"All dashboards" renders all dashboards (including an empty one) stacked
with named separators; confirmed via computed layout that only the
pre-existing app-level scroll container grows to fit the content, with no
clipping container inside the Dashboards section itself.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 5038295554 Collapse sections by clicking their title bar (ticket 006)
Alerts, Metrics, Params, and Dashboards now toggle collapsed state when
their header row is clicked, instead of requiring a dedicated collapse
button. The chevron (CollapseToggle) becomes a purely visual, non-focusable
indicator for these sections; HelpIcon and PopOutButton now stop
propagation so they keep working without also collapsing the section.

The log viewer's toggle (App.tsx/FilterBar) keeps its dedicated button,
since that row is a filter toolbar with an editable input rather than a
plain title bar, so CollapseToggle's onToggle prop stays available for
that case.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 ffeba3c274 Merge "custom themes" and "configured/imported CSS" into one mechanism (ticket 012)
The backend already stored both under one CssEntry list (Imported/Linked,
differing only by the is_theme flag), but the NavMenu Settings panel split
them into two visually-duplicated sections — "Custom themes" with its own
upload/link forms and list, and "Import CSS"/"Configured CSS" with a nearly
identical upload form and a separate list — and useSettingsPanel exposed
parallel importCssEntry/importThemeEntry and (theme-only) linkThemeEntry
wrappers around the same underlying API calls.

Consolidate to one "CSS" section: a single list of all CssEntries (each
tagged "theme" and selectable when is_theme is set), one import form and
one link form, each with a "Use as theme" checkbox instead of a duplicate
theme-only form. useSettingsPanel now exposes a single importCssEntry(name,
content, isTheme) and a generic linkCssEntry(url, isTheme) — the latter also
fixes the prior asymmetry where linking (vs. uploading) was only available
for themes, not arbitrary CSS.

No backend or settings-schema changes were needed: is_theme already
persists correctly, so existing custom-theme and imported-CSS
configuration keeps working unmodified under the unified UI.

"dark" without any manual intervention.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 70d9956059 Lay out ntfy sink server URL and topic inputs on one line
Combines the ntfy server URL and topic fields into a single flex row
separated by a "/" to visually communicate that they compose into one
destination (server + topic), instead of stacking as two full-width
rows.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 6d0cb92c19 Remove redundant "Dashboard" nav bar entry
NavMenu rendered a static, non-functional "Dashboard" span alongside
Presets/Settings/Docs buttons. It didn't toggle any panel — the real
Dashboards content (App.tsx's <Dashboards />) is already always visible
in the main content area, so it needed no nav entry to be reachable.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 0a21582282 Simplify docs and add concrete examples for input fields
Rewrites doc-panel descriptions to be direct and absolute (no edge-case
hedging), and adds concrete example values for params, metrics, filter
queries, alert conditions, and CLI arguments. Also updates the Alerts/
Settings/Presets sections to describe the ntfy-sink-in-Settings and
profile-dropdown changes.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 e69ce4e0ba Replace the Presets side panel with an inline profile dropdown
Presets is no longer a collapsible NavMenu tab. It's now a compact
dropdown in the sidebar listing profiles, with a "+" button that prompts
for a name and creates+activates a copy of the current profile, and a
"×" button that deletes the active profile (disabled for Default).

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 18c2d72d22 Move the ntfy alert sink to Settings, shared by all alert rules
Alert rules no longer carry their own ntfy topic/server; Settings now
holds one process-wide ntfy sink (with its own "send test notification"),
and the Alerts panel is left to just define rule conditions.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 ae4e550c1f Anchor log viewer scroll to visible content and add 1m/2m timeline presets
The log table no longer jumps when a sliding window prunes rows from the
front: scroll position now tracks the same visible row instead of holding
scrollTop constant in pixels. Also adds 1m/2m to the timeline quick-range
presets.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 00c21c8032 Trim comments across Rust and webapp source to direct one-liners (ticket 030)
Pass over src/*.rs, webapp/src/**, and the in-app "?" docs prose:
condensed multi-paragraph doc comments to single lines that state the
non-obvious why, deleted comments that only restated adjacent code, and
tightened the Docs.tsx help-panel wording. No logic, structure, or code
formatting changed — verified via cargo test (143 passed) and
tsc -b && vite build.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 0c4b596e3c Add pop-out button to open a section in its own tab (ticket 036)
Each of the four primary sections (Log viewer, Params, Metrics,
Dashboards) gets a PopOutButton next to its CollapseToggle/HelpIcon that
opens `?section=<id>` in a new tab via window.open. App.tsx branches on
that query param to render just the one section full-page, with no
NavMenu/FilterBar/sibling chrome — Metrics/Dashboards get the range that
was active at pop-out time via startMs/endMs query params (they have no
LogTimeline of their own to pick one), Params gets a small self-contained
params fetch since it has no LogPreview sibling to share state with, and
the popped-out Log viewer owns its own copy of the log/timeline polling
state.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 7db1e0f055 Add collapsible primary UI sections (ticket 035)
Log viewer (FilterBar+LogTimeline+LogPreview), Params, Metrics, and
Dashboards can each be collapsed/expanded via a toggle next to their
existing help icon. Collapsed state persists per-section in
localStorage (ottyl.collapsedSections) and content is hidden with the
`hidden` attribute rather than unmounted, so in-progress form state
(a half-filled Metrics/Params form, in-progress Dashboards panel
edits) survives a collapse/expand cycle.

Hugh KaznowskiandClaude Sonnet 5 dd1a0a234d Add Params declaration UI (ticket 034)
New Params panel (Log viewer / Params / Metrics / Dashboards) declares a
bare param via POST /api/params, mirroring Metrics' declare-then-list
pattern including inline 400 error surfacing. Lifted the params list from
LogPreview's own effect into App.tsx so declaring a param there updates
the Columns picker immediately, without a page reload.
